Sarah Murgatroyd’s The Dig Tree

In January we published a new edition of The Dig Tree, the perennial classic of Australian exploration by Sarah Murgatroyd. Sarah was a talented journalist and author from England, who came to Australia and fell in love with the place. She managed to breathe new life into the legendary tale of Burke and Wills, in a book that is thrilling, heart-breaking and beautifully written. Here at Text we were amazed at how Sarah, a visitor to Australia, made us realise how little we really knew this story.

Sadly, Sarah passed away shortly after the book’s initial publication in 2002. The Independent online in the UK recently re-published a moving obituary by Dominic Hughes, which you can read here. We just thought we’d share it, and take a moment to remember Sarah Murgatroyd.
