Antonia Murphy visits Riverbend Books

Riverbend Books welcomes Antonia Murphy to discuss her book, Dirty Chick: Adventures of an Unlikely Farmer.

Sitting in traffic on your morning commute, with a day of staring at a screen and answering emails ahead of you, you catch yourself wondering: what if I threw it all in for a peaceful life in the country? Antonia Murphy knows the feeling—and she did something about it.

Dirty Chick is the true story of a born-and-bred San Franciscan who leaves city life to become an artisanal farmer on the other side of the world. With a feisty sense of humour, and a charming lack of self-consciousness, Antonia Murphy recounts the joys of goat impregnation, cattle diarrhoea and the coming zombie apocalypse. The family also struggles with the health problems of Antonia’s son, Silas, who is diagnosed with a developmental delay, but finds comfort in the community of Purua, which has embraced them.

Part touching story of a family, part raunchy satire of the artisanal farming movement, Dirty Chick will make you laugh, cringe and root for its incredible, unlikely heroine.
